Pro-tequine

The Prot-equine body protector makes solo horse riding a safer activity. In the event of an accident, promptly raising the alarm and then receiving appropriate medical help limits the severity of any physical injury and reducing the number of fatalities.

Prot-equine is a rider's body protector that, during an accident, utilises sensors to detect if a rider has sustained a significant impact. If this happens, it first sends a signal to the rider's phone, alerting them to respond and preventing false alarms. If the rider does not respond, the phone sends a message to emergency contacts with the rider's location and any information it has.

The garment has quick release tabs on the sides and shoulders that, in the event of an emergency, mean the front of the body protector can be quickly removed without risking further injury to the rider and not damaging the product.

Damaged padding is replaceable following any impact, extending the life of this body protector.

This project was inspired by an accident I had in the summer of 2021 where I fell 2 meters off a Percheron horse onto concrete. I was unconscious for a few minutes and when I came round was very disorientated. Fortunately, I was with someone who helped me, however, many riders go out alone and some injuries can be time sensitive in order to recover fully. This is what inspired me to come up with something that helps make a dangerous sport safer. My helmet and body protector saved my life that day and I was very lucky to walk away with minor injuries.

The impact detection in Pro-tequine aims to minimise the amount of time that an injured rider has to wait for help, as without it, they could potentially be waiting hours for help and their condition could deteriorate.

If emergency services are needed, one of the first things they may do is cut off anything in their way. Body protectors have a lot of padding and can take time to remove. This can also move the patient which needs to be avoided. This quick release system allows pro-tequine to be split in half and removed quickly, easily and without destroying the product.

I loved working on this project. It meant so much to me and I was thrilled to have to opportunity to take it to the New Designers show in London. If you have any questions about it or simply want to discuss anything, please don't hesitate to reach out and contact me.
